Happiness After the Storm: A Mural of Belonging and Hope at Rick Hansen Secondary

February 18, 2026

A mural titled Happiness After the Storm now welcomes students and staff at Rick Hansen Secondary School. Created through the leadership of a dedicated teacher and in collaboration with students from the RHSS Pride Alliance, the mural is a powerful visual reflection of representation, community, and hope.

The mural spans four panels, each representing a season of the year. Together, they tell a story of celebration and resilience across communities that have historically been underrepresented or marginalized.

The Winter panel showcases the school’s namesake, Rick Hansen, and the community built to support those who are differently abled. The Spring panel represents the growth and dreams of people of colour, as this season begins with the celebration of Black History Month. The Summer panel represents the bonds and solidarity of the queer community during Pride events in June. The Fall panel represents the local Indigenous population and the early months of September and October, which focus on Truth & Reconciliation.

Representation Matters

At its heart, Happiness After the Storm is about representation. Seeing ourselves reflected in our schools, communities, and shared spaces matters. Whether the connection is personal, through family, or through friendship, representation helps build a sense of belonging and offers hope.

The mural reminds us that despite the challenges and injustices of the past and present, it is still possible to imagine and work toward a better future. One where everyone experiences happiness, dignity, and acceptance.

The Abbotsford School District is proud to recognize the creativity, leadership, and courage of the RHSS Pride Alliance students and their teacher mentor for bringing this vision to life. Their work reflects our shared commitment to equity, inclusion, and creating learning environments where all students feel seen, valued, and supported.
