The Abbotsford Board of Education regularly meets throughout the school year. Agendas and minutes from the public Board Meetings can be accessed through the District's Electronic School Board. Below is a summary of highlights from the meeting.
Principal Chelsea Elliott joined grade 5 students to present how author Angela Murphy shared her insightful 6-book series on self-regulation with students at Semá:th Elementary School. During two engaging evening sessions, Angela facilitated interactive activities that made learning enjoyable. Each student received a copy of their favourite book to take home, allowing them to apply the valuable tools she taught daily. Staff continued to use her series to support social-emotional learning (SEL) in the classroom, offering lasting benefits for the school community.
Principal Fay Christie and Vice Principal Janet Bauer joined students in providing a brief presentation about their school’s Around School Program. This year’s focus was primarily on school connection, with some literacy components. Programs included a Lego Club, art club, after-school sports club, soft start before-school club, sewing club, cooking activities, and more.
Superintendent Nosek provided a brief overview of the gifted project from the Abbotsford Retired Teachers Association, highlighting the resource now found on all school websites: a resource dedicated to providing information about the history of Abbotsford School's names.
The Summer Learning Leadership Team presented program highlights, successes, and future plans for the Summer Explorers and Secondary Summer School programming.
Superintendent Nosek spoke on the Measuring Up Report, which highlights progress made on each of our four pillars in the 2023-24 school year.
Greg Forbes-King, Director of Facilities & Transportation, presented a progress report to the Board. The report highlighted the department's achievements in enhancing the condition and performance of district facilities.
Monica Schulte, Assistant Secretary-Treasurer provided a progress report to the Board highlighting achievements related to how the Finance Department worked to optimize resources across the district.
Pat Taylor, Manager of Information Technology, provided a progress report to the Board highlighting achievements related to how the Information Technology Department worked on improving the ethical and innovative use of technology.
Secretary-Treasurer Velestuk provided the first quarter report on operating fund revenues and expenditures.
Secretary-Treasurer Velestuk provided a summary of enrolment compared to budget estimates.
Secretary-Treasurer Velestuk provided information about the requirement to publish annual pay transparency reports by November 1, 2024.
A recommendation was put forward THAT the Board of Education approve the sponsorship amount of $3,000, targeting youth award, to the 2025 Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Awards.
